Snorkeling at Cano Island

What an adventure we had today! We were asked to be at the office at 6:30am, where we booked our snorkeling tour, to catch the van to get to the 1.5 hour boat ride to Cano Island. The morning got off to a rocky start when there was no van to pick us up! After some calling and waiting and apparent miscommunication... the driver (Irish James) found us and drove us to our tour just as the boat was leaving.

Cano Island is a designated biological reserve so there are regulations in place to protect it. Because of this status and its location away from the shore the clarity can be awesome. And marine life plentiful. Think dolphins, turtles, puffer fish, angel fish, parrotfish, and more. So much more that I’m not even sure of everything we saw today.

We got to the dock and went onto the boat and joined 10-15 other people (we were the only Americans). The boat started going not too fast but fast through the mangroves. Then the driver starts going really fast once we were through the channel, it felt like we were doing a boat wheelie. As we were approaching the island, a woman asks if she can practice her English with us. We began a conversation with her and and we learned her and her family were headed to Cano Island to fix the refrigerator at the rangers station (it is the only building on the island). While they were doing that, we went snorkeling. We saw turtles, lots of vibrant fish, corral and shells; and Bam saw an eel!

After we picked up the family, we headed slowly back towards the dock and we saw whales (yes whales!) dolphins, and flying fish. We stopped for lunch at a beach called Playa Blanca where we had lunch and enjoyed exploring the beach and resting in hammocks. I had a close call when I was laying in a hammock and a top of a tree fell and just missed my head by an inch. On the boat ride back we drove through the mangrove, learned about the importance of these trees in the area and saw macaws. We ended the day with yummy pizza from Pizzatime.
